Volunteer experience - Project: New Dutch Waterline
The Volunteer Project: New Dutch Waterline,
30/08–14/09/2014
The New Dutch Waterline was the main defence system of The Netherlands until World War II. It is a typical Dutch defence system primarily based upon the identity of the Dutch lowlands with an intricate water management system reinforced with fortresses and bunkers. Over the last decade a lot of effort has been put into transforming this defence system into a recreational area, with a national importance especially for the Randstad, the area confined by the towns of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Den Haag and Utrecht. For more information also see: https://nieuwehollandsewaterlinie.nl/
The New Dutch Waterline is on the tentative list for UNESCO-World Heritage. This camp is also part of the World Heritage Volunteers Program for 2014.
The volunteers, we all played an important role in improving the recreational value of the Waterline by contributing to several recreational projects. We were working on a ‘wooden shoe track’ and ecological work on bunkers and fortifications. The results of all these activities were presented on film during the weekend by the end of the project, which was the National Monument Weekend, following the camp on several spots and used for educational purposes.
The outstanding results of our work were presented on the local newspapper of Utrecht!!
Questions raised during the project were: what is sustainability? Why is it important? Who does what? What can our volunteers do? The goal of this theme was to raise awareness of the topic and exchange ideas about what can be done locally, individually, and most of all: together.
We combined the goals of SIW-theme ‘Sustain (y)our future!’ with the goal of World Heritage Volunteers.
Freedom of press and creating awareness of the value of World heritage and the
role of volunteers go hand in hand!
